A Linux Computer for Every Student

This could be huge. Indiana Access Program is sponsoring a broad one-to-one computing initiative. If the Indiana Access Program is successful, a total of 300,000 Linux machines could be deployed in the near future, according to the news release. Linspire’s education initiative is key to the success of this. [via Slashdot]

Slide Rule in Javascript

This is a wonderful demonstration of a working slide rule. Really brings back high school memories. I was just old enough to be on that technology overlap. I used my father’s K & E for high school physics and got quite fast with it. Here are a couple more slide rule links:

Wind Power shows potential

This Wired News story quotes Stanford researchers’ findings that wind power could be used to easily supply the world’s energy needs, with the potential to supply 5 times its current usage.

A new map of global wind speeds, compiled by researchers at Stanford University, shows wind speeds at more than 8,000 sites around the world. The researchers found that at least 13 percent of those sites experience winds fast enough to power a modern wind turbine. If turbines were set up in all these regions, they would generate 72 terawatts of electricity, according to the researchers.

Inspector Banks is back!

Peter Robinson’s popular, nuanced police procedural series has dropped its 15th, Strange Affair. DCI Alan Banks is one of my all-time favorite characters in fiction and this installment adds to the big story with a plot that is based in Yorkshire and London. As per usual with Mr. Robinson, music often plays a supporting role; in this episode the title comes from a song of Richard Thompson. Very satisfying.
